These photographs were taken a week after the fire during the cleaning up operation. By this time the windows and doors had been made secure by boarding them over.

This is where the fire started, in the corridor between the doors that lead, on the left, to the outside and to the right, into the hall. This corridor, which links the old schoolroom with the new had for many years been used as a storage area for the playgroup.

The true cause of the fire was never established unknown but the remains of fireworks were discovered in the ashes.

The outer door can be seen more clearly in the next picture .....

... the wooden board on the right of the photo is where the this door once was. About a metre in front the inner door was set in a predominantly wooden wall. Between the two doors was all the highly flammable playgroup material. The fire quickly took hold spreading upwards and ...

These two areas were originally part of the first (pre 1924) schoolroom which was partitioned off to create a smaller room and the side entrance corridor.

... across to the mother and toddler room and the side entrance, where most of the roof disappeared.

The vestry.

The lower part of the wall shows the brick and flint construction. The upper part is blackened by the smoke which has then been washed off by the water from the fire hoses.
